The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center takes visitors back in time with ongoing live reenactments, museum displays and multi-media presentations. Chronicling the fascinating heritage of the 2,000-mile trail, a crucial 19th-century passage for settlers and pioneers of the American West, life-sized exhibit areas give visitors a feel for what it was like to undertake the arduous journey west. The center's biggest draws are its special events, which have included slide shows on the trail's role in the Gold Rush, storytelling based on writings from actual trail travelers, and even fun musical performances by the likes of the family band Kilts Askew, and Hank Kramer, the "Wandering Minstrel." The center lies about seven miles east of Baker City, just off the highway.
